Summer Wars trailer out

The latest offering from TokiKake‘s Hosoda Mamoru is due for release (in Japan) on 01 August. For more details, check out the official site.

No word yet on overseas screenings or a subtitled DVD release, but it’s probably just a matter of time.

I can’t wait.

Toki o Kakeru Shoujo – Eiga Chirashi

To mark this weekend’s screening of Toki o Kakeru Shoujo – and also because I have no time to write a proper post – here’s a heaping helping of chirashi goodness. No commentary, just pictures.

Anime Matsuri in Manila

Back from my HK-Macau holiday – but we’ll save the travel stories for future posts. Right now, I have some news that Manila-based otaku will probably find more interesting than an extended essay on Portuguese colonial architecture and Lord Stow’s egg tarts.

As part of this year’s Eiga Sai – an annual event showcasing the work of Japanese film-makers – the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation (Manila) are hosting a two-day J-Pop Anime Matsuri featuring the 2006 animated film Toki o Kakeru Shoujo.

Hot news from the New York Anime Festival: Toki o Kakeru Shoujo has just been licensed for R1 distribution by Bandai Entertainment.

. . . until members of a top-secret, government-/privately-/US-/UN-/CIA-/[insert backer of your choice]-funded organisation reveal that she is actually a space-time witch/giant robot operator/lost princess of a faraway kingdom/magic chef and that she must fulfill her (usually long-prophesied) destiny of saving the world from aliens/meteors/zombies/flesh-eating bugs/pretty much anything that can destroy mankind – while living in an all-male dormitory crammed with bishounen soldiers/ninja/athletes/wizards with ugly “Western” names (e.g. Count Michele Telethonne Pyrite von Jingleheimer) who are prepared to kill each other in order to win her hand.

I’m pleased to report that Toki o Kakeru Shoujo isn’t one of them.
