‘Tis the season . . . to be very, very afraid.
Based on an ongoing manga series of the same name by Inada Shiho, which is itself an adaptation of a series of novels written by Ono Fuyumi, Ghost Hunt follows the adventures of a young paranormal researcher and the high school student who works as his assistant. The 25-episode series originally ran from October 2006 to March 2007 and covered eight story arcs (labelled “Files”), each of which features a separate paranormal case that is investigated by the main characters. While the arcs generally begin on a light note, often mixed with a good dash of humour, the story – with the exception of one delightfully funny filler episode – invariably takes a darker turn as the members of the Shibuya Psychic Research team delve deeper into the cases that are brought to their attention. There’s a genuine sense of mystery here and things often do become quite bone chilling, but Ghost Hunt‘s appeal can be attributed mainly to its characters and the interactions that take place between them. This is one show where I can honestly say that it’s hard to pick a favourite character; I simply love them all (the regular cast, that is).
