The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Konno Makoto is an ordinary high school girl in Tokyo . . .

Sound familiar? Well, it should – about half the anime/manga you’ll ever see in your life will start on a similar note. And there’s a fair chance that for many of them, the synopsis will continue as follows:

. . . until members of a top-secret, government-/privately-/US-/UN-/CIA-/[insert backer of your choice]-funded organisation reveal that she is actually a space-time witch/giant robot operator/lost princess of a faraway kingdom/magic chef and that she must fulfill her (usually long-prophesied) destiny of saving the world from aliens/meteors/zombies/flesh-eating bugs/pretty much anything that can destroy mankind – while living in an all-male dormitory crammed with bishounen soldiers/ninja/athletes/wizards with ugly “Western” names (e.g. Count Michele Telethonne Pyrite von Jingleheimer) who are prepared to kill each other in order to win her hand.

I’m pleased to report that Toki o Kakeru Shoujo isn’t one of them.

Under the Spotlight: Misaka Shiori

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

After reading this post on doubleblader’s blog, I suddenly felt like writing about the anime girls I’ve taken a fancy to. The original plan called for a single post with brief descriptions of each character, but I soon threw that one out the window; the section on Nagato alone would have required a post of its own. New plan: write a separate entry for each character.

And so the Under the Spotlight series was born.

Today the spotlight falls on my favourite sad girl in snow: Misaka Shiori from Kanon.

WARNING: Massive spoilers ahead for the Shiori arc of Kanon.

The Host Club is coming to North America

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Hot news from Otakon 2007: representatives of FUNimation Entertainment have just announced that they’ve licensed Ouran High School Host Club for distribution in North America.

Great news for fans of the series – although I know this will give rise to yet another series of hefty charges to my credit card (and this year has already seen a record number of DVD acquisitions). Blast.

To any rich people who might be reading this: Please send money!

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu – Complete DVD Collection (review)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

With over a month to go before the third volume of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu hits store shelves in North America, an older Kyoto Animation series flew into my radar screens and earned a place on my anime video shelves. Today the spotlight falls on ADV’s Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu complete DVD collection.

Rainy day filler post – New summer shows and planned acquisitions

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I’d be in a better mood right now if this had happened to me.

I got caught in a sudden downpour on my way home from work today. The rain was coming down so strongly a stiff wind would have rendered my umbrella completely useless. In the end, there was only a weak breeze and I managed to survive the experience with nothing worse than a sodden sleeve and a dripping bag.

Nothing big to report this week; still, I felt like doing a quick write-up before turning in for the night.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – Special Edition DVD Volume 2 (review)

UPDATE (29 September 2007): My review of Volume 3 has just been published. Click here.

Now that I’ve sobered up from the effects of Saturday’s Tanabata-related excitement, it’s time to put my feet back on the ground and dish up another piping-hot review. Today the spotlight falls on Volume 2 of Kadokawa/Bandai’s special edition Region 1 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu DVD series.

Oh, and if you’re one of the fans who complained about the chronological ordering of the episodes for the DVD release, I think you’ll find the section on the bonus disc in this review particularly interesting.

Something’s happening . . .

. . . on the Newtype website.

Grainy “live” footage from security cameras showing figures moving about on a school campus at night. People who’ve read the third book in the Suzumiya Haruhi series will find the scenes eerily familiar . . .

It’s still playing even as I type this. (It’s now 9:24 PM Tokyo time.)

Will update blog as soon as I know more.

Quick background: I found out from a comment on Heisei Democracy that there was a full-page ad in today’s issue of the Asahi Shimbun saying something about an announcement on the official website and on the Newtype website at about 9 PM tonight. Tried the official site first a few minutes before 9 PM Tokyo time, refreshing several times as the clock ticked away; it didn’t load (probably because too many people were trying to access it). Struck gold with the Newtype website – that’s what I’m looking at right now.

UPDATE (08 July 2007): The video has now been removed from both the official site and the Newtype anime channel page, but downloads and screencaps are beginning to circulate. Memento has the links. (Thanks, Garten!) There’s also a YouTube version on Heisei Democracy. (Thanks, Seiya!) Watch to your heart’s content – although as I said below, it raises more questions than answers. But I think it’s worth seeing all the same.
