Acer Aspire One AOD250-1165
This model is fairly new. So it has the usual features, i.e. built in wi-fi, camera, 160 GB drive, etc, etc. This is the 3 hr battery model. I have no idea where Amazon gets their tech specs. We just bought this and the manual states that it comes with 1 GB of RAM, and is upgradeable to 2 GB. It recognized 4 wireless connections in my area the instant it was powered on. So far it’s great for what it was bought for, the internet, small low demand games, music, simple word processing…

@g0rth0r: Glad to hear from a fellow Wikitravel fan. I made good use of some of their Japan articles (mainly Tokyo and Kyoto) when I went there earlier this year; very helpful stuff. Lonely Planet was my main reference but Wikitravel did an excellent job filling up any gaps in my knowledge.

I’m a frequent reader of Wikitravel, and this is great news to hear. I’ve written a few stuff about my own city and hell, I even learned a bunch of stuff I didn’t even know about it.

No need to mention I’ve read the Japan (Tokyo included) page numerous times and it do helps when planning a trip (unfortunately, I haven’t been there yet, though I’m planning to go in exactly 1 year minus 17-20 days).

So yeah, Wikitravel fan, I am.

I love this netbook. Its small enough that i can take it anywhere but not so

small that i cant see the screen. I adapted very well to the keys that are

smaller and closer together.. and dont have any problems with it. Everything

loads up quickly and the colors are great. The battery does die out rather

quickly but that is why it is good to bring the charger with you when you go

places.. the webcam works nicely too. I definitely recommend it to anyone who is

under a budget and needs a laptop.

Spectacular! Super Pleased!
I was worried about getting one as I have had a 12″ laptop and was not happy with screen size. But this screen is SO bright it does not even become a issue, not to mention the 1064×600 really makes it seem bigger!

Another bonus, this baby runs 7.5 to 8 hours due to the 5800Amh 6 cell battery! Sweet. Very happy with that. I heard most were shipping with the 4400Amh 6 cell which gives your 5-6 hours. I can run this all day or two before recharge, very nice! I have to keep looking at battery indicator in dis-belief that the battery is still 75% or 50%, it just lasts forever!

This is super portable obviously, and really how laptops SHOULD be. You can put on one leg, it doesn’t weigh you down when actually sitting in your lap which is nice. I have had many laptops over the years, screen sizes and this one wins hands down for price, and performance. The unit is strong heavy duty case, compared to some newer thin plastic laptops.

@usagijen: I’d grab an iPod Touch or iPhone rather than a DS – but then again, I’m biased.

The versatility of this device is hard to beat, and with new apps (many available free of charge) coming out all the time, it hardly ever seems to age.

What’s more, it’s possible to get it cheap if one knows where to look. My sister got her second-generation Touch at about half the price I paid for my first-gen. Use the savings on a DS and get the best of both worlds.

Great review, now I’m starting to wonder if getting this instead of a DS (and the available Nihongo apps) would be a more worthy investment for Japanese studies and beyond… hm. To think that there are visual novels for the iPhone or iTouch too…

@Joseph: Thanks for the link. With the app in its current, much-improved state, it might even make more sense for some people to invest in a multi-functional iPhone or Touch (then download “Japanese” along with various other apps, music and so forth) rather than shell out a small fortune for an electronic dictionary that does little else than, well, act like a dictionary.

@HyperKnuckles99: That’s fair – no sense in spending a large amount of cash on a device just to use this one app. On the other hand, the many other things one can do with an iPhone or Touch might make it a worthwhile investment.
